Taming of the Valentine’s

So, it’s that holiday again. And I suppose, I should start having a go about how commercial it is, and how degrading, and how it’s ruined the concept of love, or whatever. But really, I don’t care. I don’t hate Valentine’s day, because it’s a holiday. And like most holidays, it’s much more fun getting drunk with your mates than it is being with whoever you’re meant to be with at holiday time, whether it’s your family or your significant other.

It’s one of those awkward ones too, where if you’re not in a relationship, you can either ignore it (much like trying to ignore New Year’s and feeling like a lonely pleb when you don’t go out) or you can enjoy being drunkenly bitter and over-eating with your friends (I wish there was a specific holiday just for that). If you are in a relationship, V-Day only really applies after a certain amount of weeks/months, and stops mattering after a certain amount of months/years.

But not to worry, Pop Culture Playpen readers, because I have the answer! No matter who you’re with this Valentine’s, no matter how lonely and pathetic, or disgusting and smug you are, I have the perfect film to watch. Date, or no date, alcohol or no alcohol, here it is, ya ready?

10 Things I Hate About You.

You do remember it, don’t you? This is probably the only movie from my teen years that is still a good movie. If you haven’t seen this yet, here’s a little recap, along with a list of why it’s awesome:

It’s based on Shakespeare. That right there is romantic. Except that it’s based on The Taming of the Shrew. So it’s anti-romantic. Heath Ledger (sad sigh) and Julia Stiles are two high schoolers, Patrick Verona and Kat Stratford, thrown together by her sister Bianca (Larisa Oleynik)’s meddling. Patrick is paid to date Kat, who is such a rampant feminist and pain in the ass that she scares the crap out of any guy who wants to go out with her. But Patrick wears her down. A whole bunch of Shakespearean plotting goes on, and there’s a prom!

This is one of the most enjoyable, and quotable movies ever. It also stars Joseph Gordon- Levitt (as Cameron James), and who doesn’t love him?

It may be considered a RomCom, but most guys will actually really enjoy this movie. And it’s not because there’s a particularly hot girl, or any action, or anything you would find in a Transporter movie. It’s Heath Ledger. Every guy I know who’s watched this movie gets a guy-crush on Heath. Maybe they want to be like him, maybe it’s a James Dean thing where he died young and tragic. Or maybe, just maybe, it’s because he’s excellent.

So settle down with your boy/girl/friends/dog/collection of cats to watch this, and forget about the red and pink decorations, because this is a love story with bite. And occasionally, vomit.
